Abstract
Theophilos Corydalleus (1574–1646), head of the Patriarchal School in Constantinople, was one of the brightest figures of both the Paduan and Greek schools. Corydalleus devotes the first work in his Compendium of Logic entirely to a study of the nature of logic. First of all, he proves that logic cannot be an episteme, but only a technē. To this purpose he makes a detailed survey of the meaning of these concepts in Aristotle, which shows the difference in their understanding by modern and Latin authors. He does not recognize the distinction between practical and theoretical logic, which allowed the Scholastics to classify the latter as scientia. Corydalleus also disagrees with the position of the Stoics that logic is part of philosophy, he considers it to be an instrument of philosophy. He focuses on the subject of logic, or rather on its matter (since logic is a technē, it has matter) as well as its ends, i.e. the genitive and dative telos of Aristotle. Corydalleus summarizes that logic is the instrumental tehnē of philosophy, whose matter is concepts (νοήματα), expressed in meaningful words (φωναί); logic gives us the rules by which we can construct logical tools from meaningful words — this is its genitive telos, these instruments are used by philosophy, which enables the dative telos — the distinction between truth and falsehood. Rhetoric, which also consists of words, differs in the way of action, narrowness of subject and goal, which is to convince the audience.
